Jackie Stewart says Lewis Hamilton is a “little ballerina,” and the three-time F1 champion calls for Mercedes to punish Hamilton following his behavior during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Stewart would like to see Hamilton taken to task for putting himself ahead of his Mercedes team in the championship-deciding Grand Prix last weekend. Hamilton received multiple radio transmissions from the team instructing him to pick up the pace but, despite the clear instructions he was being given, he continued to back Nico Rosberg into traffic in a desperate bid to recapture the title for himself.

“I think (Hamilton) can be a little ballerina,” said Stewart in an interview with Press Association in Europe. “Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda are not stupid people, and neither is the Mercedes chairman who often comes to Grands Prix. You cannot threaten a multinational corporation of that size by one man who is just not doing it the right way. Give him the option of ‘either do it our way or you have to be excused.’

Despite team orders, the individual did what was necessary to try to win and this was really the only tactic he could use. Winning is all a race driver wants to do, but what about when a win isn’t enough?

Mercedes were guaranteed a drivers championship and they should have just let the drivers sort it out, apart from a clear instruction to have no contact.

I don’t blame Hamilton for doing what he did, nor would I have blamed Rosberg if the tables were turned.

Yep, racing is racing. If Hamilton was driving too slowly, why didn’t Rosberg overtake?

Hamilton was only backing Rosberg up in the final sector where you cannot overtake plus Rosberg didn’t need to overtake. I honestly believe Mercedes knew it was going to happen this way (many of them are racers, not just suits) and their radio calls were just another form of damage control. It’s a win-win for them, let the public talk all they want.

And yet the team is acting like Hamilton put the team at risk. Hamilton and Rosberg could have crashed into each other (again) and Mercedes would still have ended up with both the constructor’s and driver’s championships.

I see nothing wrong with how he drove, but I’m a little disappointed by his reaction to the outcome. You lost by 5 points, it isn’t the end of the world. Congratulate Nico, move on, beat him next year and hold a fourth championship over Nico’s head.

Maybe I’m just old, bordering on senile (if my ex is to be believed), but I remember a time when it was more about sportsmanship and less about always winning regardless of the cost. I’m thinking back to Tour de France crashes where the race would temporarily halt allowing the new leader to help the previous leader up so that they could have a fair and honest competition and not just take victory by default. I’m also thinking back to the 1979 Formula 1 season where Gilles Villeneuve could have taken the championship but instead followed orders and let his more experienced teammate have the title even though he was probably the faster driver.

Crucify me if you will, but I never cared for the antics of drivers such as Senna, Schumacher or Prost, and never looked at their attitudes as some sort of ideal. Hamilton’s constant whining gets him pretty close to joining this elite group. Senna may have demonstrated some god-like driving skills at times, but in my mind the ruthlessness he used to eliminate the competition showed me that he was not a sportsman or gentleman, only a cold and heartless tactician, something which isn’t really worthy of admiration. Even that wonderful documentary about him couldn’t change my mind despite all of the good he did off the track.

Post-retirement Jackie Stewart is more of a crybaby than Lewis Hamilton. I kind of can’t stand him.
